A bomb placed in a tunnel under a checkpoint has killed at least 30 Syrian soldiers, AFP reports.

“Around 30 regime forces were killed…in a blast in which several tons of explosives were planted in a tunnel beneath a checkpoint on the northeastern outskirts of the town of Maaret al Numan,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Islamic Front, one of Syria’s biggest rebel alliances, posted a video online that showed the explosion, according to AFP.

Opposition fighters regularly plant bombs in tunnels to attack government forces.

This most recent attack was on the line of defense for a military base that Syrian rebels have been attempting to take control of for more than a year.

Syria’s civil war has left over 150,000 dead and has forced millions to flee the country.
