Abu Dhabi cops say a shoplifter caught stealing from a supermarket tried to swallow fake notes after he was busted.

Security officers at the supermarket, which is in a large shopping mall in the capital, spotted the 36-year-old man on CCTV as he shoved unpaid items into his pockets.

Abu Dhabi Police released these cartoons on Saturday to illustrate what happened. Police said the suspect stole items including sweets, juices and cigarettes worth about Dhs165.

Colonel Dr Rashid Mohammed Borshid, chief of CID at Abu Dhabi Police, said the store notified cops after they detained the man as he tried to leave without paying.

Officers said the man tried to swallow a number of Dhs100 bills as they led him to a private room.

Borshid said security staff forced him to spit out the notes before he could swallow them. Police confirmed the notes were forgeries. Borshid added detectives found a huge amount of fake Dhs100 notes when they searched the suspect’s house.

The man, who is Arab, was also was found to be an absconder, having run away from a firm where he worked as an electronic engineer. Police said he admitted shoplifting and forging notes using a scanner with a 22-year-old friend. Cops said the accused tried to swallow the dodgy notes to avoid being charged with forgery.

The suspect and his friend have been referred to the Public Prosecution.
