Almost 90,000 people in Switzerland used 'post price ticketing' since 2018 trial.

Switzerland will become the first country in the world to let public transport users across the whole network pay after they have completed a journey.

Almost 90,000 people have started using this 'post price ticketing' system on the bus, tram or metro since a trial started last year.

Transport provider CH-direct said users appreciate 'spontaneous travel' and getting 'the best price' and it will be introduced fully by 2020.

In the new system a person logs the start of their journey on their smartphone when they get on public transport.

When they have finished the journey, they input this data and the app calculates the total price of the trip.

If they forget to log the end the ride once they get off the bus or metro then the app reminds them to swipe out, reports the local ch.

This means people will no longer need to carry change or have to buy a paper ticket. However these options are still available for those who don't wish to use the app.

Project manager Silvia Kandera said: 'Three years after the launch of the project, we are in a position to definitively introduce this innovative technology.

'This reinforces the position of Swiss public transport and our spirit of innovation.'

Automatic ticketing is currently available with apps from BLS, Fairtiq, SBB, Zürcher Verkehrsverbund and TCS.
