Egyptian comedian actor Ahmed Helmy expressed his extreme joy at the overturned verdict in the case against co-patriot and peer comedy giant Adel Imam that cleared him for charges of contempt of religion in his films.
In a new Morsi-led Egypt that is brimming with Islamic zeal, Adel was initially convicted to a three month jail sentence. It was not before appealing the court ruling that he was exonerated and pronounced innocent of all charges.
According to MBC.net, Helmy stood up to declaim that the final verdict confirmed the integrity of the judice system, not least because it did not stand to reason that anyone be prosecuted for a fictional role they played in a film project.
Helmy said that if for one second he felt that slap-stick actor Adel was disrespecting religion in his work, he would be the first to turn on him and demand his due diligence.
The comedy man stressed that Muslims in general and Egyptians in particular are very attached to their religion and they would not have stood for anyone insulting it any fashion. But he would rather they turned their sensitive devotion away from false accusations against their friends in the acting community to those 'enemies' that truly insult the Islamic religion.
Helmy sent out a special message to Adel saying, “May God protect you for you are an icon of Egyptian art and your legacy will live on and on.”
