Robert De Niro joined world-renowned chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa to officially open the world’s largest Nobu restaurant in Doha, Qatar.

The celebrity co-owners opened Nobu Doha to the public in April this year, but the grand opening didn't go down until this past weekend.

Dubbed as “a night with Nobu and De Niro” at the Four Seasons Hotel, the two legends officially launched the restaurant on Saturday night (November 7) in traditional Japanese style by breaking the lid of a large drum of Hokusetsu sake with wooden mallets.

Keeping it fully authentic, a five-piece taiko drumming group flew in straight from Tokyo to perform at the event, in addition to a special set by DJ Soma.

The Hollywood icon was mobbed by 450 dinner guests at the chic Japanese joint - who paid $400 USD each for canapes, drinks and the chance to meet their idol.

The Godfather actor briefly addressed his fans by thanking them for attending the special evening, adding that “It’s great to be here tonight. This is a great restaurant.”

De Niro, 72, spent the evening mingling with fans, taking selfies and signing autographs. Looks like starring in his most recent film The Intern has given him a spring in his step.

Although De Niro did his best to meet and greet everyone at the venue, some expressed their initial disappointment at not being able to get close to their hero.

“I thought everyone would be seated and he would move between us all. I feel sorry for him (De Niro) with everyone thrusting their cameras in his face. It’s a little bit much,” attendee Janice Langdon said.

Doha native Mariam Al Rumaihi, who had met De Niro several times before, attended the event especially to see him in her hometown.

“It is nice he is a guest in our country. He is so humble,” she said.

As for Chef Nobu, he was delighted this branch was opened after long discussions, adding, “They have made it a beautiful place.”

Before flying into Doha, De Niro and Nobu were in London's Berkeley Street outpost just a few days earlier to mark its 10th anniversary as part of an international tour of their chain.
