Lily James is one of the leads in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, who Meryl Streep has said is 'perfect' as a young Donna.

And it seems that their shared role in the ABBA musical isn't the only thing that the two actresses have in common, as it seems that they might also be distant relatives.

According to the Daily Mirror, Lily, 29, and Meryl, 69, are ninth cousins, three times removed, thanks to sharing British ancestor Henry Howland.

As well as being the 12th great-grandfather of former US President George HW Bush, Howland had sons Henry Junior and John who links Lily and Meryl together.

According to the publication, Henry Junior is the eighth great grandfather to Meryl, while John is Lily's 11th great grandfather through her father.

In the film, Lily plays young Donna during her infamous time with her three love interests Sam (Jeremy Irvine), Harry (Hugh Skinner), and Bill (Josh Dylan).

The newest film follows Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as she tries to run her mother Donna's (Streep) villa in Greece while pregnant and finds out more about her past.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again 'goes back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present,' according to Deadline.

Of Lily taking on the role, Meryl said: 'Some people sing from the bottom of their feet, right up. She shakes the rafters, she's amazing.

'Lily has a great energy, And her spirit is what young Donna was. She's just perfect.'

Lily didn't quite feel the same way, as she admitted: 'When I found out I would be part of the sequel, I was terrified and very excited.

'Donna is a character so beloved and Meryl Streep is the best actress of all time.'

While Donna is such an iconic character, fans may be sad to hear of Meryl's small role in the film.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about Donna's 'death', musical and film creator Judy Craymer said: 'Well, she just wasn't good enough, you know? [laughs]

'To be honest, she was always a part of it. Would we have done another film without her? She was so glorious in the first movie and has so much affection for Mamma Mia!

'So, she was always a part of a conversation of another film. I think for her, it was a matter of what and how, and we also did chat occasionally about it. It was a matter of the right script.'
