ALBAWABA - The worldwide smash hit program "Baby Reindeer" is facing a multimillion-dollar damage lawsuit from a Scottish lady who claims the show defamed her. Netflix said on Friday that it would defend the allegation.
A Scottish lady has sued Netflix and Richard Gadd, the creator of the Baby Reindeer series, for $170 million in defamation. She claims that it took thousands of people on Reddit and TikTok "a matter of days" to identify her as the basis for a stalker in the program. Actress Jessica Gunning's portrayal of Fiona Harvey's character, Martha Scott, has allegedly ruined "her reputation, her character, and her life" by employing "brutal lies" motivated by "greed and lust for fame."
Since its April premiere, "Baby Reindeer" has dominated most-watched lists throughout the globe, sparking curiosity about the show's characters and their inspirations among viewers. Internet detectives identified Harvey as the "real Martha Scott" last month, and he appeared on the YouTube program "Piers Morgan Uncensored" to lament the devastation she had endured.
The case names Netflix and Netflix Worldwide Entertainment as defendants. Gadd has also been mentioned. The miniseries consists of seven parts and stars Gadd as Donny Dunn, a struggling comic.
This paper claims that the tale was the "biggest lie in television history" and that the defendants and Gadd were responsible for spreading it.
Netflix and Gadd's lies, motivated by "greed and lust" for financial gain, allegedly "viciously destroyed" the life of an innocent lady, defaming her "at a magnitude and scale without precedent."
The representative for Netflix assured CNN that the company would "defend this matter vigorously" and would support Richard Gadd's ability to share his story.
After Gadd told the story of his encounter with a suspected stalker at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Netflix ordered the miniseries in 2021. In a Netflix essay, he described the scenario as "messy" and "complicated," yet he insisted on telling the narrative nonetheless.
