December 28 will be a Pink Friday in the UAE: tabloid! can confirm Nicki Minaj will perform in Dubai on that day.
The influential female rapper will bring all her “Va Va Voom” to the stage at Meydan Racecourse for her debut performance in the UAE.
The colourful quadruple-platinum-selling diva, famous for hits including Super Bass, Starships and Moment for Life, has been a fan of the UAE for a number of years and earlier this year tweeted her excitement at a Dubai stopover en route to a show in the Philippines.
Dubai-based Alchemy Project, the organisers behind this year’s new year’s eve concert by Snoop Dogg at Meydan, have answered Minaj’s prayers and booked her to play the UAE.
“We are extremely excited to bring this amazingly versatile artist to Dubai,” said Mac S Far, managing director at Alchemy Project. “Nicki Minaj is currently one of the top three world musicians. We had an unprecedented fan-base request and without exaggeration, this could be the most attractive solo concert of the year.”
Minaj is a somewhat controversial character having had many a public feud, commenting on everyone from Mariah Carey — her fellow judge on the latest season of reality show American Idol — to Lady Gaga to whom she is often, much to her annoyance, compared.
Case in point: in the past 24 hours Minaj has blasted former Idol judge Steven Tyler for “racist comments” against her and has hit out at retailers for her poor album sales.
The Moment For Life singer posted a furious twitter rant aimed at the Aerosmith frontman, 64, after he slammed her feud with fellow new judge Mariah Carey and urged her to start focusing on nurturing the contestants like he did during his two seasons on the show’s judging panel.
“These kids, they just got out of a car from the Midwest somewhere and they’re in New York City, they’re scared to death; you’re not going to get the best [out of them],” Tyler said. “If it was Bob Dylan, Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield! Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out, as we did with [last year’s ‘American Idol’ winner] Phillip Phillips. Just saying.”
Not impressed with his comments the 29-year-old rapper hit back with two long tweets on Monday night writing “Steven Tyler said I would have sent Bob Dylan to a cornfield??? Steven, you haven’t seen me judge one single solitary contestant yet. I understand you really wanted to keep your job but take that up with the producers. I haven’t done anything to you. That’s a racist comment. You assume that I wouldn’t have liked Bob Dylan??? why? black? rapper? what? go f**k yourself and worry about yourself babe.”
She later wrote: “When Steven 1st went on Idol he was ridiculed by his peers & fans alike. Called a sellout. So what does he do? Ridicule the next judge.”
Minaj has been breaking international records since she flew onto the music scene in 2007. Born Onika Tanya Maraj in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, but better known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, she moved to Queens, NYC, aged five. Minaj trained as an actress before releasing three mix tapes between 2007 and 2009, when she eventually signed to Young Money Entertainment.
Her debut album, Pink Friday, was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in November 2010, peaking at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. In the same month she also became the first female solo artist to have seven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at one time. Minaj’s seventh single, Super Bass, has now been certified quadruple-platinum by the RIAA, and has sold more than four million copies, making it one of the best-selling singles in the US ever.
Minaj’s concert takes place just days before the Alchemy Project’s New Year’s Eve Atelier Live concert featuring Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz Sound System, Faithless (Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss), DJ Armand Van Helden; and two weeks after another Alchemy concert by Chris Brown at the same venue.
