Director Guy Ritchie co-wrote the screenplay for Aladdin with Vanessa Taylor and John August.
The British filmmaker is best known for his action-packed crime comedy's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (200). Some of his other films include Revolver (2005), RocknRolla (2008) and Sherlock Holmes and it's sequel (2009 and 2011).
Disney's animated version of Aladdin tells the story of a young man manipulated by the Sultan's wicked Vizier Jafar. Aladdin stumbles upon a genie lamp that has the power to give him everything he's ever wished for. But, when the genie's power falls into the wrong hands, it's up to Aladdin to save the day.
The original role of the Genie was voiced by the late Robin Williams. Disney executives maintained that Smith will put his own stamp on the character during an appearance at CinemaCon in April as reported by Variety.
The 1992 animation was the highest grossing film that year, raking in over $504 million in the box office. It also received two Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Song for A Whole New World.
The new live-action Aladdin will be released May 24, 2019 in the UK and the US.
