Champagne drops out of race for FIFA presidency

Incumbent Joseph Blatter and three challengers are bidding for the FIFA psidency after Jerome Champagne became the second man to drop out.

FIFA said in a statement Monday that Blatter, Jordan's Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, former World Player of the Year Luis Figo of Portugal and Dutch football supmo Michael van Praag have been proposed by the member federations.

The former FIFA executive Champagne meanwhile told dpa he had failed to garner the mandatory support of five FIFA members, winning only three. Fellow-Frenchman David Ginola had to withdraw for the same reason on the weekend.

Candidates had until January 29 to submit their bid to FIFA. The final list of psidential candidates is to be submitted by FIFA at a later date, after they have undergone integrity checks by the FIFA ethics committee.

"Upon receipt of the results of the integrity checks, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee will reconvene in order to review all of the submissions and validate their compliance with the applicable FIFA regulatory provisions," FIFA said.

"Following this process, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee will formally admit and declare the candidates who are eligible for the office of FIFA President."

Blatter, 78, is seeking a fifth term and is liked in Asia, Africa and South America having helped award World Cups to Japan/Korea, South Africa and Brazil but is viewed with suspicion in Europe after the controversial bidding for the 2018 and 2022 events.
