Prominent Syrian actor Jamal Suleiman is preparing to take part in a new Egyptian drama titled “Al Shawari’ al Khalfieh” (The back streets), in which he will play the role of an Egyptian police officer that refused to obey the orders of his commanders and open fire on protesters.
Suleiman stressed that the production of the drama, which is directed by Jamal Abd Al Hameed, began before the recent protests in Egypt’s January 25 revolution that overthrew the government of former Egyptian President Husni Mubarak broke out. The actor said that it did not occur to any of the drama’s makers that the revolution would break out at this time.
According to the internet website MBC.net, Jamal added that the story of the drama is taken from the novel by Ahmad Abd Al Rahman Al Sharqawi and scenarist Midhat Al Adel felt it was of great importance that such a drama is created to touch the hearts of everyone.
The drama discusses the revolution of the Egyptian people during England’s occupation of Egypt in the 1930s, and the events are very similar to those that took place in Egypt recently in Tahrir Square.
