A raid by French authorities on a flat in the north Paris suburb of Saint Denis began early Wednesday morning in pursuit of several suspects, including the alleged mastermind behind last Friday's attacks, Abdelhamid Abaaoud.

Before noon Wednesday, a French prosecuter said one female suspect blew herself up with a suicide belt, the BBC reports. Other reports suggest two suspects have died.

Eight suspects were arrested and two killed Thursday, though conflicting reports are still emerging about the whereabouts of Abaaoud.

The BBC also reports the possiblity of a ninth suspect in Friday's attacks, identified by security footage, according to security officials.

Witnesses reported the sounds of continued gunfire all morning, in addition to an instance of grenade fire.

Abaaoud is a 27-year-old Belgian with Moroccan origins whose planning role in the Paris attacks was originally thought to be carried out from Syria.
