At least 17 people were killed and scores of others wounded in the Gaza Strip, Golan Heights, Ras Maroun in Lebanon and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, as Palestinians marked the "Nakba" (Israel's establishment in 1948). .

At least one Palestinian died and some 80 others were hurt in northern Gaza Strip as Israeli forces opened fire on a march of at least 1,000 people heading towards the Erez crossing between the Strip and Israel.

Meanwhile in south Tel Aviv, a 29 years old Israeli man was killed and 17 were injured when a 22-year-old Arab Israeli driver drove his truck into a number of vehicles on one of the city's main roads. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the Arab driver was arrested at the scene and is being questioned.

On his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hoped the confrontations would not escalate. "We hope the calm and quiet will quickly return. But let nobody be misled: we are determined to defend our borders and sovereignty," Netanyahu stated from his office.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a televised address that those killed were martyrs to the Palestinian cause. "Their precious blood will not be wasted. It was spilled for the sake of our nation's freedom," Abbas said.
