abu dhabi university’s english language institute to introduce new initiatives in spring 2008
English for Special Purposes (ESP), On-Line-Campus Business English, initiatives for Summer Camp 2008, TOEFL and IELTS classes, and multimedia CALL labs are all positioned to enhance language proficiency in the UAE
Furthering their expansion and development plans, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has recently announced new specialized initiatives to be introduced at their English Language Institute. Courses in English for Special Purposes, a summer camp for high-school students and multimedia Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) labs are some of the new projects students can benefit from at ELI starting spring 2008.
“We strive to incorporate the highest international educational standards and scientific methodologies whenever we plan to launch a new scheme, and the new programs at ELI are no exception. We are certain students will benefit from these services in both their academic lives as well as their professions,” commented HE Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of the Executive Board of Governors of ADU.
English for Special Purposes (ESP) are courses tailored to meet the needs of the UAE community and the job market needs of the GCC. In addition, ESP will offer online business English courses available with an in-campus component.
Offering the “Summer Camp Experience” for high-school students in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, in grades 8 -11 will focus on further developing students abilities and skills in English. This will be accomplished through group work, team projects, and individual instruction which will prepare the Summer Camp students for their futures in their secondary careers as students, in their development into a productive citizen of the UAE, and in their future academic courses - whether at ADU or elsewhere.
Finally, ELI’s new CALL labs offer multimedia tools and activities which mirror classroom environments. The CALL labs are equipped with flat screen PCs, wi-fi internet, and English language learning software that includes: Dynamic English, Azure English, Rosetta Stone, Tense Buster, TOEFL Prep software, Pronunciation Master and Typing Master.
Mrs. Sandra Zaher, Director of ELI, confirmed that most of the teachers at the ELI are native English speakers from the US, UK, Canada and Australia and hold Master’s degrees in English and TESOL. “Our teaching methodology uses the constructivist approach to teaching and learning which uses a variety of curricular and extra co-curricular activities/events, aimed at empowering students with self-confidence by providing ample opportunities for them to improve their language skills,” she added.
ELI welcomes applications from individuals with a career or leisure interest in learning or improving English.
