Airstrikes from unidentified warplanes on Saturday have left at least 40 civilians dead, eight of whom were children, Reuters reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as saying.

Accoding to monitoring group, it remained unclear whether the warplanes reponsible for the strikes were operated by Russia or the US-led coalition.

Earlier on Saturday, the Observatory had put the civilian death toll from the strikes at 16, adding that they had hit shops and small restaurants, Reuters reported.
