Speaker Nabih Berri held talks with Army Commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi Thursday to discuss the security plan drafted to restore order in Lebanon’s Tripoli where the military made more arrests of gunmen in the embattled northern city.
Kahwagi and Berri also discussed the recent security developments in Lebanon at the speaker’s Ain el-Tineh office.
The Army said it arrested three more people in Tripoli, bringing the total number of detainees to 28 since Monday when the government gave the military exclusive power to take charge of the city and end the clashes.
Two people identified as Rami Seifeddine Hassoun and Bilal Nasr Hassoun were arrested for engaging in shooting incidents on several occasions, the Army said in a statement.
It also detained Abdel-Hamid Mohammad Awad for beating up a national and assaulting a soldier.
The army also said it removed 17 barricades and large curtains which were put up in the streets to block the clear sight of snipers.
In a separate statement, the Army said it referred four detainees who were arrested earlier this week for involvement in the Tripoli fighting to the military prosecutor's office.
Life returned to normal in Lebanon's second largest city after days of fighting between supporters and opponents of President Bashar Assad’s regime left 13 people dead.
The city has witnessed 18 rounds of fighting since the uprising in Syria began in 2011 in addition to the Aug. 23 car bombings outside two mosques that killed 47 people and wounded at least 100.
Tensions have been on the rise after the judiciary charged seven people for involvement in the car bombings, some of whom are members of the Alawite Arab Democratic Party and have links to the Syrian intelligence.
