Bahrain’s garment exports surged by 40 percent last year, totaling 330 million dollars, reported the Gulf Daily.

“The industry is playing an increasingly important role in Bahrain’s economy,” said Hussain Al Mahdi, committee advisor of Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry garment.

However, it needs to seriously diversify its export market if it wants continue to thrive in the future, he noted.

Exports of ready-made garments and textiles from Bahrain to the US, the main market for the industry, have doubled in the past five years, remarked Mahdi, who is also chairman of the Gulf Global Consultancy (GGC).

The industry, which emerged in the mid-1980s to take advantage of the US quota system for garments and textiles, currently comprises 22 operational factories producing ready-made garments and four textile mills, said the paper – Albawaba.com
