Two generators at a Bahraini power plant failed on Wednesday, leaving thousands of homes without power for up to an hour, reported the Gulf Daily News.

The breakdown at the Hidd power plant led to automatic load shedding - a mechanism used to prevent overloading - to reduce the sudden increased demand on the plant's remaining generators.

Among the areas affected were parts of Hamad Town, Isa Town, Manama, Muharraq, Budaiya and Riffa in the capital Manama, said the paper.

An electricity and water ministry statement said the cut resulted in the loss of 18 percent of the electricity load at that time - 1,120MW.

Ministry engineers began work to compensate for the loss with the help of the Riffa, Muharraq and Alba power stations.

As a result of their efforts, power gradually returned to the affected areas.

The ministry said it regretted the inconvenience caused to consumers but urged them to use electricity wisely to prevent future power cuts - Albawaba.com
