At least 43 people have been killed in clashes between American troops and Shiite fighters in Baghdad and the holy city of Najaf over the past 24 hours, the Iraqi Health Ministry declared Sunday.

According to Reuters, the ministry elaborated that 22 people died in Baghdad's mainly Shiite suburb Sadr City and other parts of the capital from 9 a.m. (0500 GMT) Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. At least 21 people were killed in similar fighting in Najaf during the same period.

The U.S. Army said Friday 300 Shiite fighters were killed in Najaf but a spokesman for the Shiite forces put losses at 36 dead.

An Iraqi security source reported one Iraqi Nattional Guard was killed and another wounded Sunday when a roadside bomb hit their patrol north of Baghdad. (albawaba.com)
