US President Barack Obama will be sending 50 special operations forces to Syria in the country's efforts against Daesh (ISIS), reports said Friday.
A US official told The New York Times the special operations forces will head to Kurdish-controlled territory in northern Syria to help opposition fighters against Daesh.
The group will be providing the rebels with better access to equipment and logistical help, the official said. Reports didn't mention specifically whether the US forces will be assisting the People's Protection Units (YPG) or other opposition groups.
The announcement comes after the Obama administration had repeatedly said the US will not be putting boots on the ground in Syria, showing a shift in foreign policy in the conflict.
