AFP reports that new security measures at Bulgaria's border checkpoint with Turkey are not for incoming asylum seekers - but westerners crossing into Turkey.

Bulgaria is a major transit zone of not only incoming asylum seekers, but also outgoing westerners looking to cross into Iraq and Syria - to join Daesh.

As Al Bawaba previously reported, while most of the suicide bombers in Friday's deadly coordinated attacks on Paris were French or Belgian nationals, there is evidence that they traveled to Syria for training and preparation beforehand.

Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, issued a new order that all vehicles must be searched and passports checked while entering or exiting the country.

"The queue this morning is about 10 kilometers (six miles) long despite our efforts to conduct the checks as quickly as possible," a border police official at the checkpoint told AFP by phone.

Officials at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint have arrested dozens of foreigners suspected of trying to travel to Syria and Iraq for extremist-related purposes.
