Dubai Men’s College Media Students win Awards at the 2008 Emirates Film Competition
At the 2008 Emirates Film Competition which was held in Abu Dhabi from 4th – 7th March, Applied Media Studies students from Dubai Men’s College earned an impressive number of awards.
The Emirates Film Competition, which aims to promote the realization of a well-established film industry in the United Arab Emirates, was open to both filmmakers from throughout the Gulf region as well as to producers from further a field. This year’s competition witnessed not only an increase in the number of film categories but also a rise in the monetary value of the awards. Among this year’s newly-introduced prize categories was that of script-writing.
The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage which organises the competition aspires to support the expanding film industry in the United Arab Emirates as well as to provide a platform for young filmmakers who are keen to depict the culture and national identity of the country.
At this year’s competition, students from DMC won awards for two documentaries which were produced as part of their media projects in the Applied Media Studies program at the college. Nasseer Jaber directed the Best UAE Short Documentary (Students’ category) for his work entitled:
“Educational Contrasts” and the Best Gulf Short Documentary (Students’ category) was won by Ahmed Mazrouei for “Discrimination”. In addition to this, DMC graduate Moath Bin Hafez who directed “On the Line” was awarded the prize for Best UAE Short Fiction Film (in the general category). These outstanding achievements follow a tradition of success for DMC students at the Emirates Film Competition, having won an award for the best student documentary last year. “This is an inspirational achievement that highlights the talents of young UAE national students in Media. It is fantastic news and the awards were well-deserved,” said Yousaf Darr, Chair of Applied Communications at Dubai Men’s College.
