Supporters of Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi are staging a rally in Cairo today. The supporters have called their march the “March for Legitimacy and Sharia.”
The protest in support of Morsi comes after days of protests against a constitutional decree, which critics have said, put the President above the law.
According to Ikhwanonline, the official webpage of the Muslim Bortherhood in Egypt, there are three marches planned for today.
Protests were held across Egypt yesterday against Morsi’s decree and the new constitution that the President has rushed though to try and calm fears. Yesterday in Tahrir Square, opponents were chanting “the people want the down fall of the regime”, the rallying call of protesters during the Arab Spring.
The new constitution has plunged Egypt into a new crisis, as opposition figures say that it protects some rights, whilst withholding others. Morsi has said that he will forego his new powers once the constitution is passed by popular referendum.
Since Morsi’s decree, protests have swept the country. Two people have died as a result.
