Four masked gunmen stormed a house in Egypt's northern Sinai city of al-Arish and killed two policemen, the Associated Press reported.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said the attack took place early Thursday, although the statement did not say who was behind the shooting. The northern Sinai Peninsula has been the center of an ongoing battle between Egyptian security forces and an armed insurgency affiliated with Daesh.

Militants have been battling the Egyptian army and police for years in Sinai, but the attacks have become more frequent and deadly over the last year. The Daesh-affiliated group has also carried out bombings and assassinations in mainland Egypt.
