Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher on Tuesday evening described in glowing terms a statement issued by European Union foreign ministers that highlights Israeli killings of Palestinians.
“The statement responds to many of the Palestinian and Arab demands, including the immediate implementation of Mitchell Commission recommendations, the provision of a mechanism for cease-fire monitoring, and an end to Israel’s illegal actions,” said Maher.
Maher told reporters that the EU statement pointed in particular to the Israeli assassination operations and other such provocative unilateral actions.
The Egyptian foreign minister predicted that the European nations would go to the upcoming G-8 meeting with a strong and unified stance, which would be reflected in the outcome of Genoa event.
Responding to a question regarding a mechanism to deploy neutral observers as proposed in the statement, Maher said he expected the Geoa meeting to make decisions that would help in the rapid implementation of the Mitchell recommendations to end the Palestinian people’s suffering and approach final status negotiations.
Maher once again welcomed an effective European role in the efforts currently being made to contain the situation.
He also welcomed the Russian and UN roles, and said that he would support any effort to help the Palestinians overcome “the difficult situation created by Israeli practices.” – Albawaba.com
