Egypt's Shura Council on Saturday approved a proposal to scrap lashing as a penalty applied in the country’s jails.

According to the consultative council, "violating the orders and instructions inside prisons should not be punishable by lashing."

The Kuwaiti official news agency (KUNA) said that a law of 1956 stipulates that the inmate “shall be punished by maximum 36 lashes if he violates orders and instructions by the prison wards.”

The notorious practice was the subject of campaign by lawmakers and human rights activists to cancel it. In response, Interior Minister Habib Adli froze the practice, pending a Parliament move to abolish the old law – Albawaba.com
