Range of topics discussed included EMS, UPU Clearing, parcels, terminal dues and Quality of Service

An Emirates Post delegation, led by Mr. Abdulla Al Daboos, President of Emirates Post Group, participated in UPU (Universal Postal Union) meetings in Berne recently and discussed vital postal issues, including EMS (Express Mail Service), parcels, terminal dues and quality of service.

As member of the Council of Administration (CA), Emirates Post participated in a major meeting that decided to shift the venue of the 2008 UPU Congress venue from Nairobi to Geneva, in view of the civil unrest in Kenya. Emirates Post team also took part in the Postal Operations Council (POC) meetings as an observer.

Emirates Post CEO, Mr. Ibrahim Bin Karam, held a meeting with EMS Cooperative officials, in which the latter hailed Emirates Post as a model for the region. They also discussed Quality of Service issues and their application to the region.

Emirates Post also participated in UPU experts groups on postal payment services, which discussed multilateral agreement, financial relationships between designated operators and branding/positioning.

“The postal services are becoming more sophisticated as customers are getting more demanding and competition throws more challenges,” said Mr. Abdulla Al Daboos. “The UPU meetings helped postal administrations keep track of the changes taking place in the postal sector and highlighted the need for innovation, diversification and wider deployment of Information Technology. Our team was able to make meaningful contribution to the deliberations on various postal issues.”

The Emirates Post team comprised Mr. Abdulla Al Daboos, Mr. Ibrahim Bin Karam, Saif Al Shehhi, Director of Operations, Abdulla Al Suwaidi, Director, International Relations,  Omar Lootah from International Postal Services, Fahad Bin Fahad, Quality Officer, Saud Al Suwaidi, Executive, International Relations and Ahmed Rashid, director of President’s office.

The Council of Administration consists of 41 member countries and meets annually at UPU headquarters in Berne, Switzerland. It ensures continuity of the UPU's work between two Congresses, supervises its activities and studies regulatory, administrative, legislative and legal issues.
