In reply to US allegations that Iran was failing to combat Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi said Wednesday that certain members of the group under arrest could be put on trial in Iranian courts.
Kharazi insisted Tehran was serious in fighting Al Qaeda, pointing out that several of its members were in Iranian custody.
The Foreign Minister told a news conference that "those who should be sent back to their countries will be, and those who have committed acts against Iran will be tried in Iran itself".
Late Wednesday, British prime minister Tony Blair warned Iran not to support al Qaeda or any other terrorist group which might undermine the new peace process under way in the Middle East. Arriving in the region to visit British troops in Iraq on Thursday, the British leader also called on Tehran to cooperate fully with the UN's weapons inspectors to "discover exactly" the nature of its nuclear program.
