Heavy fighting erupted in the Afghan border town of Spin Boldak after the Taliban lost control of Kandahar airport, a relative of the province's former governor said Monday.
Troops loyal to Haji Gul Agha were engaged in fierce clashes with Taliban militiamen in the town, which is some 120 kilometers (72 miles) from the city of Kandahar, the close family member told AFP.
Tribesmen close to Gul Agha also told AFP that some 30 US troops landed at Toor Kotal, around five kilometers (three miles) from Kandahar airport late on Sunday night where they captured two stinger missiles from the Taliban.
