high-achieving students honored at dubai men’s college

The Diploma Foundations Department of Dubai Men’s College (HCT) has announced its list of high-achieving students for Mid-Semester One.  A total of six students attained the Gold level, while twelve reached the Silver level.  In order to be eligible for the Gold Honours List a student must have maintained an A or A+ average in both English and Maths, while an A- in those courses is required for the Silver List.  Students were also screened as to absences and behavioral issues.  These lists comprise an exclusive group, as only one student in ten was able to place his name there.

The initiative, which began last year, has proved a surprising success.   According to faculty member Bob Cochrane, who monitors the program, the number of students eligible for the honour more than doubled, from 8 students last year to 20 this year.
“Teachers are always looking for ways to encourage students not to be satisfied with simply passing, but to aim high, to aim for the top,” Mr Cochrane said.  “This is not only a reward program; it’s primarily an incentive program.  We want all the students to say, ‘Next time, my name will be on that list.’”

Peter Hatherly-Greene, supervisor of the Foundations Department, concurs.  “We were surprised by the magnitude of the reaction.  Students responded by putting more effort into their studies and taking more pride in their achievement.  The growing number of Honours List students is very gratifying.”

Each student received token prizes and will see his name on a plaque placed in every Diploma classroom until February, when the final lists for Semester One will be announced.  Below are the names of students who are now on the Gold and Silver Honors lists.
