HP Middle East, the region’s largest technology and solutions provider, called upon regional media to adopt new technology and take advantage of digital archiving at the Arab Media Forum yesterday.  HP, a key sponsor of the event, also equipped the media centre with its wireless notebooks and digital printers, giving journalists and broadcasters first-hand experience of its leading-edge technology. During the conference, HP Middle East, outlined the key benefits of digital archiving including cost saving strategies and identification of new revenue streams.

Why digitize?

Once digitized, news and information can be archived, searched or browsed by audiences. Additionally, it can be broadcast around the world at lightening speed – taking regional news to the rest of the world.  With its extensive portfolio of digital archiving products and services, HP can help Middle East media better meet their audiences’ needs, reduce costs, drive incremental revenue and increase data security.

“Today’s news comes in many forms – from physical newspapers and magazines, to television, the Internet and even your mobile phone,” said Helmy. “Technology in the region has evolved to a point that media can take advantage of exciting new applications for digitizing physical information. Access to this technology means media-houses in the Middle East are able to save costs and offer new services, in order to increase their competitiveness within the region and beyond,” he added.

Looking back in TIME

Earlier this year, HP Labs undertook a project to digitize the entire 80 year print run of one of the world’s widely read publications.  The objective was to automate the process as far as possible, going far beyond what had previously been achieved in the field. The resulting collection, housed at TIME.com, provides a vast online record of history in the making from 1923 to today.

The archive contains each issue’s cover, photos and more than 266,000 original articles marking landmark events in history such as the Great Depression and the Beatles’ US debut.

Journalists attending the conference were also given the opportunity to experience HP products first hand at the Arab Media Forum’s press centre.  HP supplied wireless notebook PCs and digital printers for the journalists to file stories and work productively while at the event.
