Iran's interior minister has announced plans to "decentralize decision-making powers" and shake-up the Islamic republic's unwieldy administrative culture, reports said Wednesday.

Abdolvahed Mussavi-Lari was quoted in the local media as saying his ministry would soon present to parliament a bill that would provide more say to local officials, who currently have to refer most decisions to Tehran.

"This law shows the government's willingness to give more powers to local councils, elected local officials and those in charge of the different regions, " he said, according to AFP.

Local officials in Iran's 28 provinces exercise only limited powers under a cumbersome administrative system inherited from the former imperial regime. (Albawaba.com)
