AFP reports that the Iraqi justice ministry executed five prisoners on Monday, in response to the Baghdad suicide bombing that killed over 200 people.

According to AFP, the prisoners were not linked to the suicide bombing. Their crimes were not released to the public.

The Iraqi justice ministry released a statement that the executions were to show the families of the Baghdad bombing victims "that their brothers in the justice ministry are continuing to deliver just punishment to those whose hands are stained with the blood of Iraqis.

"Therefore, we would like to announce the implementation of death sentences against five convicts this morning," the statement concluded.

Jordan conducted similar executions in 2015. The country executed two Daesh prisoners after the militant group burned alive a Jordanian pilot.

The executions drew criticism from rights group Amnesty International, which said capital punishment should not be used "as a tool for revenge."
