In line with its aim to promote social development, global and regional digital leader LG Electronics recently sponsored the Iraqi soccer team in a match against Palestine. The match was held at the King Abdullah International Stadium in Eastern Amman, recently.
In a tense match, which saw Iraq eventually beating Palestine 3-0, the teams demonstrated high levels of ingenuity as they competed to qualify for next year’s Asian Football Confederation Cup Tournament. Both teams played within the Group E qualifying rounds of the tournament. The group also includes China and Singapore.
Solidifying its role as a supporter of sports, LG extended its sponsorship towards the Iraqi team throughout their preparations for the games. LG provided the team with financial support, equipment, training facilities and guidance. Taking its interest in the endeavour a step further, LG also presented Younes Mahmoud of the Iraqi team with the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award.
The award is granted by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) at every Asian Football Confederation Cup Tournament to players who demonstrate exceptional skills and sportsmanship throughout their performance. This year, LG presented the winner with an LG Chocolate Mobile Phone, one of its most innovative products in the market.
Commenting on LGs’ role within the sporting arena, Kevin Cha, the General Manager for LG in Iraq, said: “We at LG see ourselves as so much more than makers of consumer electronics. We are also key supporters of social development. In our opinion, sporting activities are key to bringing communities, societies and nations closer together. We feel it is our duty to work towards such unity.”
He added: “We renewed the contract to sponsor the Iraqi Football Association for another two years in May 2006. Our support for the Iraqi team comes as part of our belief in its abilities, and we look forward to seeing it play again against Palestine next month. We wish both teams all the best.”
