Hamas on Wednesday denied accusations that it had secretly stored weapons on Jordanian soil. As a result of the alleged weapons discovery, Jordan cancelled a trip by Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Al Zahar to Amman at the last moment.
"These accusations are false and completely contradict the well-known attitude that it does not intervene ... in the internal affairs of other countries," a Hamas representative said, according to Reuters.
Palestinian deputy prime minister Naser Al Shaer added that, "We have no information about this incident and we are certain the brethren in Jordan will find out the Palestinians are not involved in such acts."
Jordan revealed on Tuesday that a cache of rocket launchers and other weapons reportedly belonging to Hamas had been seized by Jordanian authorities.
Hamas stressed that it was disappointed that the affair resulted in the cancellation of Zahar's planned trip to Amman.
Zahar is currently touring Arab countries in an attempt to raise funds for the Palestinian Authority to match those frozen by Israel, the United States and other world powers who consider Hamas a terrorist organization.
"We regret the way the Jordanian government used (this) to justify the cancellation of the visit by Palestinian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Al Zahar at the last moment," he added.
Hamas took over the Palestinian government on March 29 after winning January elections.
