The United Nations on Monday said at least 15,000 civilians have been killed and twice as many wounded in the Iraqi conflict since the start of 2014, AFP reported.

The UN published the figure in the latest installment of its "Report on the Protection of Civilians in the Armed Conflict in Iraq.”

The UN "recorded at least 44,136 civilian casualties (14,947 killed and 29,189 wounded) as a result of the non-international armed conflict in Iraq."

The world body acknowledged the report only accounts for figure it was able to verify and the real death tool may be much higher, AFP reported.

No official figures exist for fighters from the Daesh extremist group or from Iraqi forces, but it is believed that thousands from both sides have also died over the same period.

The conflict began when Daesh militants took over parts of Anbar province early 2014.
