Lebanese police have arrested a Palestinian man in connection with last year’s attack on the Russian embassy in Beirut, judicial sources said on Thursday.

The sources identified the suspect as Bilal Saadi, adding that he was arrested on the Lebanese-Syrian border after having traveled from Jordan, reported the Daily Star.

The suspect was referred to investigating magistrate Hatem Madi, who was appointed to oversee the case by the justice minister.

The verdict in such a case cannot be appealed. Saadi will be questioned by Madi on Thursday, said the paper.

In January 2000, Palestinian Ahmad Raja Abu Kharrub, a member of the Esbat Al Ansar group, attacked the Russian Embassy with a rocket-propelled grenade.

Abu Kharrub and a policeman were killed in the subsequent shootout and seven others were wounded.

The sources said that Saadi might have been waiting for Abu Kharrub in a getaway car.

Police found a letter in the Abu Kharrub’s pocket which said he wished “to die for Grozny,” the capital of Chechnya, a republic with a Muslim majority in southern Russia and the scene of a bitter war between Russian troops and Chechen separatists – Albawaba.com
