Medtronic today announced they have been named as the, “Leader in Diabetes Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for the Year 2005,” at the 13th Annual Meeting of Diabetes Educators in Riyadh, held recently in Saudi Arabia.

This award recognizes Medtronic for their contribution in the field of diabetes especially with regard to intensive insulin therapy and training of medical personnel in the Middle East.

Diabetes is currently reaching epidemic proportions. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region there is an estimated 15 million people with diabetes (WHO, 2000). Worldwide it is estimated there are approximately 194 million adults with diabetes and this number is expected to reach 333 million by the year 2025. Much of this increase will occur in developing countries and will be due to population growth, ageing, unhealthy diets, obesity and sedentary lifestyles.

Since September 2002 Medtronic Diabetes and its partners offer customer and patient service in the Middle East, assisting pump users with insurance paperwork, training for pump initiation, and ordering supplies. In addition, the company provides ongoing educational support for healthcare professionals and patients. Nationwide educational programs are also provided for diabetes patients and the healthcare community.

“We are proud to receive such an award from this highly respectable institution. This recognition reinforces our commitment and dedication to improve the quality of life of diabetics and their families through partnering with health care providers across the region” Iskandar Moussa, Ph.D. Business Manager Middle East - Medtronic Diabetes.

Founded more than 20 years ago, Medtronic Diabetes is the world leader in insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring. The company designs, manufactures and markets diabetes-related supplies, and advanced therapy and software systems to improve the lives of people with diabetes.

About Insulin Pump Therapy
An insulin pump is a small pager-size device that delivers insulin around the clock, much like a healthy pancreas. It is the most advanced method for precise and adjustable insulin delivery. Unlike injection therapy, pump users can program their pump to deliver insulin at varying rates to meet their changing insulin needs throughout the day and night. In addition, insulin can be delivered on demand at the touch of a few buttons. Many patients experience improved quality of life with pump therapy, ridding themselves of multiple injections, strict meal schedules and rigid sleep patterns that are associated with injection therapy.
