The new US ambassador to Egypt, David Welch, arrived in Cairo Friday to take up his post, replacing Daniel Kurtzer who has moved on to Tel Aviv, said reports.
According to the US embassy in Tel Aviv’s website, Welch has served as assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of International Organization Affairs since October 1998.
From 1995 to 1998, he served as deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs and served as deputy chief of mission in Riyadh from 1992 to 1995. He has held a variety of other posts both abroad and in Washington, DC, and has earned numerous awards including the (State)Department Superior Honor Award and Meritorious Honor Award.
