More than 100 students, mostly girls, mysteriously fell ill and were hospitalized in the Behsud-1 district of central Maidan Wardak province on Wednesday, officials said.

The students included 100 girls and 15 boys who fell unconscious after they entered classrooms from a break at Istiqlal school, the district statistics officer and tribal elder, Syed Habibullah Tafasali, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the students fell ill after they entered classrooms following a break. He said the affected students were rushed to the district health centre and 14 students were in critical condition and were likely to be shifted to Kabul.

Executive officer of the Behsud-1 district, Zahir Wihdat, said so far it remained unclear what knocked the students unconscious but an investigation into the matter was underway.

Similar incidents have recently taken place in other provinces.
