A Palestinian prisoner on Thursday died in an Israeli jail. According to Palestinian sources, the detainee, Fawaz Balbal, 30 from Tulkarem area died in Megido jail. Israel is yet to provide the reason for his death, Palestinian sources said late Thursday.

Earlier, seven armed Palestinians trying to cross into the Gaza Strip surrendered to Egyptian security after a 24-hour standoff, Egyptian sources told Reuters.

In the Gaza Strip, Palestinian gunmen freed Brigadier-General Mohammad Al-Batrawi, the head of the financial surveillance department of the Palestinian security forces, hours after kidnapping him, according to local witnesses.

Batrawi had replaced Fuad Shubaki, who is currently detained in Jericho.

The kidnappers had sought to pressure Batrawi to arrange jobs in the security services for friends and relatives, Palestinian officials said. (
