ALBAWABA - Triggered by Israel's Isaac Herzog's visit to Washington, Israelis and Palestinians from a range of political positions, were out at different locations around Capitol Hill demonstrating the welcoming of Herzog in the White House.

Sammy Alqasem, an organizer with the Palestinian Youth Movement, told The New Arab website: "Our group came out here today to oppose the visit of the Israeli president who spoke at the Capitol in front of Congress,".

"Whether it's the president, the prime minister, or even a lowly government worker, they all play a part in the ethnic cleansing of our historic land of Palestine," Alqasem added.

The protests took place on the same day that Israeli President Isaac Herzog delivered a speech to a joint session of Congress, addressing both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Herzog delivered a speech before the both the House of Representatives and the Senate addressing the Iranian file, as well as increasing fractious divisions over the judicial overhaul.

Following a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, where both discussed mutual interests and bilateral ties, Herzog held a press conference where he told reporters: "Israeli democracy is tough and resilient, and we should definitely see the current debate in Israel with all facets as a tribute to the strength of Israeli democracy,".

Timing of Herzog's Visit

The timing of the visit is deemed controversial as, on one hand, Israel faces one of the biggest protests across the country entered its seventh month regarding the planned judicial overhaul. On the other hand, Israel has been receiving enormous criticism amid the rise of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank and other parts of the country.
