The top Palestinian security official in the West Bank, Jibril Rjoub, has sought to open a secret channel for talks with Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon using the CIA as a go-between, reported the Haaretz newspaper, citing Israel Radio Wednesday.

The report said Rjoub met CIA chief in Washington, George Tenet, and told him of his hopes for contact with Sharon aides regarding a resumption of Israeli-Palestinian security cooperation.

Quoting a classified report received by the Israeli foreign ministry, the radio also reported that Rjoub had criticized Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and his colleagues for the way they conducted the negotiations at the Egyptian resort of Taba in January.

According to the report, Rajoub said that the Palestinian leaders who had come from abroad in 1994 to rule the Palestinian areas, did not understand the mentality of their Israeli counterparts – Albawaba.com
