Sabban Property Investments announced that is has renewed its carbon neutral commitment with ‘The CarbonNeutral Company’, the world leading provider of carbon reduction solutions. The developer of the first 100 per cent carbon neutral project in the Middle East - the QR 1.2 billion ‘Sabban Towers’ development, has reported its investment in the ‘Hennstedt Biogas Project’ in Germany and ‘Kotmar Waste Heat Recovery Project’ in India, has offset 329 tons and 76 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) respectively. By offsetting a total of 405 tons of the harmful greenhouse gas, the developer has achieved the ‘CarbonNeutral’ status with net zero carbon footprint.
To receive its CarbonNeutral status, SPI has gone through a 4-step process of measurement, reduction, offset of CO2 emissions and communicating what has been done to educate people on the importance of taking action to counteract climate change. SPI worked with ‘The CarbonNeutral Company’ to measure and offset the CO2 emissions from the construction of the ‘Sabban Towers’, which was estimated at approximately 88,700 - a figure that was already reduced by 12,800 tons (14.4) per cent through the developer’s value engineering. The remaining, unavoidable emissions were counterbalanced by supporting projects designed to absorb or prevent the creation of greenhouse gases in Uganda, New Zealand, Jamaica, China, India and Germany.
“We strongly believe that greenhouse gas emission reduction is the most sustainable solution to the problem of climate change, and we are committed to reducing and avoiding emissions where possible in the future,” said Nicola Clarke, Environmental Advisor, Sabban Property Investments. “In addition to our involvement in carbon offset projects across the globe, we are proud that we have successfully reduced a significant amount of our own CO2 footprint by understanding where the emissions come from including the energy used in our offices, commuting and business travel, the waste we send to landfill, and from there devising a plan to reduce our carbon footprint. We have also initiated recycling programmes and are introducing challenging emission reduction targets as well as supporting educational programmes on climate change.”
‘The CarbonNeutral Company’ is the world’s leading carbon offset and climate consulting business, working to enable businesses and individuals to tackle their climate change impact. Working with over 200 corporate clients as well as NGO’s and government agencies including Honda, Berkley Homes, Ricoh and Barclays Bank, BSkyB as well as celebrities and over 50,000 consumer clients, the company has more than 12 years experience in evaluating the benefits of offset inclusive carbon management strategies, which will deliver immediate, cost-effective reductions in carbon emissions.
“Our aim is to continue being a leader in this field and to be the pioneer in carbon neutrality in the Middle East property development sector through our comprehensive reduction policy and plan. Considering and reducing our carbon footprint for all future developments or expansions will also a top priority for us. We will encourage sustainable design, green building principles and we aim to include renewable energy in the projects we will be working on henceforth,” concluded Clarke.
SPI also actively contributes to various environmentally-focused groups in the region, including the Emirates Green Building Council, and the Emirates Wildlife Society - World Wildlife Fund (EWS-WWF).
