More than 700,000 refugees have fled Syria and registered in neighboring countries, the United Nations said on Tuesday.
Aid workers are struggling to meet the demands of Syrians fleeing the 22-month conflict, which has led thousands to seek refuge in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey in recent weeks, as fighting in Damascus and Dara’a has intensified.
"We have seen an unrelenting flow of refugees across all borders. We are running double shifts to register people," Sybella Wilkes, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told Reuters in Geneva.
The actual count of displaced persons due to the conflict is probably far higher, as many Syrians do not immediately register with aid agencies.
