Twenty-three people died in two road accidents on a highway south of Cairo in accidents attributed to high speeds shortly before the sunset end to the Ramadan fast, a police source reported Thursday, cited by AFP.
Seventeen were killed and 13 injured when two cars collided after one vehicle tried to pass another on Wednesday on the highway running to southern Egypt near the town of Al Fashn, 140 kilometers (85 miles) south of Cairo, the source said.
Six were reported killed and 11 others injured on the same day and the same highway in a four-car pile-up that also occurred during a passing incident near the town of Beni Suef, 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of the capital.
The time around sunset during Ramadan is notorious not only in Egypt, but in other Muslim and Arab countries for high-speed accidents, with many drivers trying to rush home to catch with their families at the meal.
