Two Eritrean soldiers have defected this week to the Saudi Kingdom, Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz said in remarks published on Sunday. "Two Eritrean soldiers, aboard a boat, took refuge in a port in the kingdom, " the minister was quoted as saying.
He did not provide details on the two soldiers' identities or the reasons for their defection, but said Saudi authorities were trying to "investigate their case."
A Saudi coast guard told AFP that "the two high-ranking officers arrived on Saturday at dawn at Al-Qahma," a Red Sea port, some 200 kilometers north of Jizan. "They arrived aboard a boat loaded with weapons and explosives, and made an immediate request for political asylum in the kingdom," he said. (Albawaba.com)
