ALBAWABA - On Sunday, the Israeli army said that its troops had destroyed an underground tunnel that went hundreds of meters through the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, which is north of Gaza City.  The Israeli military says that the tunnel had an operations room that Hamas's Al-Zaytoun Battalion used to plan attacks on Israeli troops.

The Israeli military spokesperson said in a statement that its troops attacked a building linked to the tunnel and killed several fighters who were said to be hiding inside.  There was an entry shaft in the building that led to the underground route.

The spokesperson also said that the army had hit "dozens of terrorist targets," including observation posts and weapons depots, which the military said were a direct threat to Israeli forces in the area.

The Israeli army also said that the Nahal Brigade carried out the operation, which included coordinated attacks on what they thought were Hamas's military bases.  The army said that its fire-control systems were used to kill militants and destroy important Hamas sites, such as weapons storage and reconnaissance sites.

There has been no independent confirmation of the claims, and Palestinian officials have not yet said anything about the reported deaths or destruction.
