A married teenage girl under treatment at a private clinic in Ferozkhoh, the capital of western Ghor province in Afghanistan, says her in-laws subjected her to violence and hard labor on a daily basis.
The 17-year-old, Gul Hazar, was brought to the clinic of Dr. Mirajan Ahmadi by one of her relatives for treatment. The teenager said she had been facing violence at the hands of her father-in-law who gave her leftover food from his dog’s bowl.
She said her father-in-law would always send her to the mountains to collect woods. After she was done, she would return home and eat what food the father-in-law's dog had left. The father would not allow her to burn the wood to warm herself up.
Gul Hazar said she was often beaten by her mother and sister-in-law. “They even decided to kill me,” she said.
Mullah Sakhi Dad, one of the girl’s relatives, said her father-in-law and husband once abused her sexually, using a stick to penetrate her. He said the signs of torture, burn marks and beatings were visible on her body.
He demanded the government investigate violence against the girl and punish the perpetrators.
Doctors at the private clinic of Mir Ajab Ahmadi confirmed the girl had been tortured.
The district police chief of Dolina, said the girl’s mother-in-law, father-in-law, husband, and sister-in-law had been arrested.
