An Egyptian militant group that pledged allegiance to ISIL last month has claimed it was behind the killing of an American oil worker, William Henderson, in August, AFP reports.

A member of the group, which calls itself Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, tweeted that they claimed the murder. The message was accompanied by pictures of Henderson’s work identity cards and passport.

Egyptian security forces told AFP on Monday that police had received information that jihadists had killed Henderson in August.

Henderson worked for the US oil company Apache, and was slain near his workplace in the Western Desert.

According to US media reports, the 58-year-old Henderson was killed in a carjacking while working in the Karama oil field on August 6.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis pledged allegiance to ISIL in November, and is based in the Sinai Peninsula. They have been designated a terrorist organization in Egypt, AFP reports.

The group is responsible for killing scores of police and soldiers in Egypt after the army ousted former president Mohamed Morsi.
